sinkin' in the couch

so my new-found drive to do some daily art is working thus far. i've got something new AND i've got some sketches in the que to attempt to digitize. i really need to figure out what the deal is with my scanner, because if i have to keep taking my sketch book to work to scan, i foresee growing wearing of lugging it back and forth. or i'll forget it. but its working for now. i sketched this last night whilst krystal was snuggled in the couch reading a magazine.

i heart my mac

so krystal and i discovered Photo Booth on our laptop last night. here is the result:

holy shit

so we have a client at work who is a non-profit group who takes under-privileged kids out on a boat and teaches them how to sail. well, we're updating their homepage, and i've been going back and forth with their project managers (pm's) trying to get approval on what images to use in the flash piece. the following i pulled directly from our client extranet:

client pm #1, 25 feb at 11:34 am
"if only two images are best, please use the sextant image we like. if you can do four more effectively, please do so. thanks - client pm #1"

me, 25 feb at 11:49 am
"you're talking to someone without sea-legs here... what is a sextant?"

client pm #1, 25 feb at 11:58 am
"it's the image of the tent, in which, two teenages are having sex."

client pm #2, 25 feb at 11:59 am
" A sextant is an instrument generally used to measure the altitude of a celestial object above the horizon. Making this measurement is known as sighting the object, shooting the object, or taking a sight. The angle, and the time when it was measured, can be used to calculate a position line on a nautical or aeronautical chart.

The picture that has the man and the girl holding a funny looking object, that is the sextant and the above is what they are doing with it.

It’s the old fashion way of navigating."

WOW. i think it makes it way funnier if you know the guy, because thats not something i would ever expect him to say. and i like how pm#2 responded back right away with the real answer. trying to cover up some embarrassment, me thinks.

totally made my day.

slacking...

so another weekend came and passed, and i didn't pick up my sketchbook. no excuses, but i'm gonna start hardcore this week. no freelance work coming up. no other distractions (hopefully).

we did do some spring cleaning (even though i looked today and saw that spring is still 6 weeks away, which is sort of depressing). We have a hefty stack of things to drop off at a goodwill, which always makes you feel warm and fuzzy. and our closet is clean. also nice.

we went to a party on saturday night. brendan's brother-in-law turned 31 this weekend, and we were invited to join in on the festivities. we were both a little worried about there being too many degrees of separation between us and the person of honor (me -> brendon -> brendon's wife, rachel -> matt, rachel's brother, the birthday boy), but we got there, and there was no need for concern. everyone was extremely cool. i dont think i've felt that comfortable around that many people that i didnt know in a long time. probably since being back at school. i guess i don't really know what that means. does it mean i'm more comfortable with myself in meeting new people? does it mean we've finally found a group of like-minded people in this town that we can have fun with? probably a little bit of both. either way, its a good thing. we drank some beers (from a keg!), had some delicious homemade hot wings, did some boogie boarding down the stairs. oh! and there was a clown! it was hilarious! she made balloon animals. her name was cookie. and i think she was really worried when she came in and saw a bunch of drunk adults. probably a little outside her comfort zone. but hilarious none the less.

and so it begins...

well, this isn't the first time i've attempted to start blogging. but i'd really like to stick with it this time. this year, i made the first serious new year's resolution i've made in my entire life. try to draw an hour a night. doesn't sound like too big of a hassle. but here it is, 52 days later, and i've stuck to my resolution for maybe 10 days total. that's 19.2%. definitely an F in most books. but i'm going to go out on a limb and grade myself under some sort of montessori method. that makes me feel somewhat better.

my "big picture" goal with this resolution is to be a professional illustrator by the time i'm 30. i think that's reasonable. so, to sound cliche, i'm really only cheating myself by not sticking to it. i have taken a couple of freelance illustration jobs for cheap/nothing to stick to it. so that's cool. and i really want to get rolling on ambur's graphic novel. so i guess my ultimate goal with this blog is to post my drawings. not necessarily to share them, but to give myself mini-goals to work towards the big ones.

so check back to see what happens... it'll probably be a bit slow to start (my damn scanner isn't working for starters), but hopefully i'll get into a nice groove with it. and maybe i'll just ramble every once in a while too... thats always fun.

*side note: they just said "vaginal vault" on C.S.I.

*side note to the side note: on American Dad last night, Roger the Alien referred to a woman's vagina as a "baby cannon", which i thought was hilarious. that show is so under-rated.
